4 Common Sleep Problems That Are Keeping You Up All Night

Do you spend your day worrying about tossing and turning at night?  And then you actually suffer that way when in bed at night! So, you know that solution to a good night isn’t easy. Sleep problems can manifest themselves into so many odds. Hence, don’t just think you might have chronic insomnia. It could mood swings, hormonal changes, stress, and a list of other causes.

1: Anxiety Attacks

There’s always a stressor when it comes to anxiety. Perhaps a breakup, childhood memory, an accident, or a scary thought. It affects your sleep even if you think you have healed. The worst part is it kicks in the middle of the night.

Sleep sets in but you are barely able to get any restful sleep. Sleep medicine specialists say that these types of sleep problems become self-propagating. You eventually become conditioned to feeling anxious.

Solution

Fortunately, this problem is not one of the sleep disorders you can’t treat. The most effective solution is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. A therapist will teach you a technique to identify the underlying stressor. Once it’s addressed, your sleep will improve.

2: Early Sleep schedule

This one’s no brainer. Your job, business, or family schedule could leave you exhausted earlier so much that you are fast asleep at 7 pm. People who belong to this category are unable to sleep the whole night. They wake up around 2 am and have a hard time falling back to sleep.

Solution

Doctors say if that’s your case, you are spending too much time in bed. You need to fix your sleep schedule or perhaps reestablish the routine. It’s just like fixing your kids’ sleeping habits once school starts.

Stay staying awake late and adjust your bedtime gradually. Make your body adapt to a new schedule. This might take some time so don’t rush. And if you still find yourself awake, instead of lying in the bed, get up and do something.  Have a cup of herbal tea. It will soothe you up for bed.

3: Chronic Insomnia

Okay, this one of the sleeping problems many complain about. They can’t remember the last time they had a restful sleep. It always takes more than an hour to put yourself to sleep. Then, you wake up several times throughout the night. Some rely on sleep medications to break the waking-up cycle. It only makes the situation worse as they feel dizzy the next day.

If you have tried yoga, exercise, quit caffeine, and every other trick in the book to solve this problem, you have chronic insomnia.

Solution

The best thing you can do is see a sleep medicine doctor. Doctors also suggest improving your sleep habits and creating the right environment. For instance, don’t use your phone at night, dim the lights, apply lavender scent on your pillowcase, etc.

Hormonal Changes

This is common in ladies. They never had any sleep trouble until menopause hit. Tossing and turning becomes the norm. You can’t get a night of restful sleep and in the morning you are always sluggish.

Solution

No, the solution is not hormone replacement therapy. You must see a doctor. They would suggest sleep medication. The doctor might also look into your hormonal changes. For instance, if hot flashes are huge trouble for you, sleep in a cooler room to put yourself to sleep.

4: Too Wound Up to Sleep

Your sleep problems can sometimes be self-created. Staying up past midnight reading, watching a TV or catching up on work is not just harmful to health, it can mess up your sleep.

When you are so caught up, you actually start dreaming about work or whatever task you were last doing before heading to bed. This makes you wake up anxiously. Such sleep is never restorative.

Solution

If your work schedule doesn’t allow you to design a restful sleep schedule, you must take a nap during the day. Get enough sleep to balance it out especially on the days when you wake up early. Even an hour’s sleep can make a big difference. If you don’t doze off, it doesn’t matter. Just lie down and rest. Most of all, don’t let the thought of work disrupt your peace.

A good night’s sleep is important to stay productive and fresh throughout the day. It’s critical for your Immunity system too. The human body needs enough rest to be able to function the next day. Follow these sleep tips to improve your sleep.
